Environmental Action

Everyone deserves access to safe, clean, and vibrant green spaces, no matter where they live in the city. We are dedicated to creating sustainable urban environments and supporting communities through building awareness, knowledge and action.

Our environmental initiatives are designed to help you learn, benefit from, and transition to a more sustainable, climate-resilient future – all while having fun!

Sustainable Urban Futures – The Nature & Wellbeing Centre

The Birmingham Settlement Nature and Wellbeing Centre in Ladywood (formerly Selwyn Road Playing Fields) borders Edgbaston Reservoir which is a ‘Site of Importance to Nature Conservation’ and a ‘Local Nature Reserve’.

The site sat dormant over many years until we reactivated it as a local community asset in 2018. Following self-generated investment, Phase One was completed in 2021 and we began delivering regular activities.

The Nature & Wellbeing Centre is now home to the ‘Red Shed’ – an eco-friendly community café – two geodesic learning domes and an amphitheatre, along with open green space, compost bays, community growing and re-greening projects.

Green Minds

Schools & Groups

We faciliate eco-learning and group sessions on a range of sustainable practices, and provide outdoor learning and education for groups.

Green Volunteering

Make a positive difference on the local environment and in the community through a range of outdoor volunteering opportunities.

Wellbeing Services

Nature for health and wellbeing, from pilates and yoga in the outdoors to our social walking group and projects for improving mental health.

Environmental Learning

At the heart of our work is making the most of our community resources to educate and inspire about how we can protect and nurture the environment right in our own neighbourhoods.

From composting to gardening groups, our Little Settlers Nature Club, school sessions, and family activities, we offer something for everyone. Our initiatives are designed to help people of all ages and backgrounds learn about sustainability and enjoy the many benefits of green spaces.

Connecting To Nature

We work to reconnect communities with nature and their local environment for individual well-being and community resilience.

At our dedicated Nature & Wellbeing Centre at Edgbaston Reservoir, we offer a range of activities to bring people closer to nature. Plus, over at our Sports & Community Centre in Kingstanding, we’re transforming our green space to increase biodiversity and enable environmental learning and stewardship.

Neighbourhood Futures Festival

A four-day festival embracing nature, right in the heart of Birmingham!

Focused on community wellbeing and climate change, the Neighbourhood Futures Festival explores how we can combat global issues within our own neighbourhoods.

Co-delivered with the University of Birmingham Centre for Urban Wellbeing and community partners, the festival amalgamates thought-provoking activity, conversation and action, with family fun, music, art and performance.
