October half term was packed with excitement here at Birmingham Settlement as we welcomed children and families for a week of fun and spooky activities.
At the Kingstanding Sports and Community Centre, Sporting Elite hosted their popular week-long holiday camp for children aged 4-11. From sports and gaming to arts and crafts, a great time full of fun and laughter was had by all who attended.
We also hosted parties to celebrate Halloween. Little Settlers enjoyed their own themed party in the day, whilst children and families joined us in the evening on 30th October. Guests arrived in their best costumes for our fancy dress competition, enjoying an evening full of spooky stories, party games, arts and crafts, and pumpkin carving. The night was complete with music, dancing, and plenty of Halloween-themed treats. A special thank you to Sam and Craig for their amazing face painting and donations, and to Matteo, our talented young musician who played the keyboard!
Over at the Nature and Wellbeing Centre, children enjoyed a variety of outdoor and nature-themed activities.
On Tuesday, our Little Settlers club teamed up with The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), for a special workshop about Swifts, who migrate all the way from Africa to Birmingham every year. Children created Swift tails to put their agility, speed, and endurance to the test, as well as making wildflower seed bombs, building nests out of materials gathered in flight, and creating colourful Swift drawings. The team even dressed up as insects for the day, making it an unforgettable learning experience!
On Wednesday, we welcomed back the Young Bunch holiday Club in partnership with Eco Birmingham. Following the success of our summer camp, the session offers teens aged 12-15 the opportunity to connect with nature, learn new skills, and enjoy screen-free time through outdoor games and activities. Feedback from attendees was extremely positive, with one teen saying, “I look forward to coming to any future sessions you may hold”, and another adding, “if it doesn’t happen again, I will be very upset!”.
This half term was a busy one with a range of activities for children of all ages. For future school holiday events, keep an eye on our What’s On? page – we’d love to see you at the next one!
