In April 2019, we launched our English My Way course aimed at women with little or no English language skills. Twelve women enrolled from all over the world including Sierra Leone, Iran, Romania, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Some of the women had been in the country for only a few weeks but they very quickly became friends. They were all interested to discover more about the fellow women’s lives before they came to the UK which we explored through through food, music and conversation.
As well as working our
way through the English My Way programme which includes themes like shopping, transport, school and telling the time, the women also took part in our International Women’s Day and enjoyed taking part in a Bollywood Dancing workshop. They helped to deliver our Mother’s Day celebrations and recently enjoyed a trip to Birmingham Library. Several of the women now come along to our Banner Making Workshop.
Eight women made it to the end of the course and graduated. Three of the women have now found work after we linked them to our employability programme and one of the women has begun volunteering for us.
For many of the women, they reported that they feel more confident when speaking English. They feel more involved in community life and not as isolated.
English My Way returns in September 2019!
